Pennsylvania Physicians’ Declaration on Abortion Pill Safety

This form collects physician signatures to affirm professional support for safeguarding women through medically informed abortion pill practices.

Removal of medically indicated protections for mifepristone (abortion pills) has provided increased accessibility and opened the door to an unprecedented rise in online and telehealth abortions with very little medical oversight. Healthcare providers are witnessing the significant risks and complications that result. As lawmakers consider removing common sense protections for women, PA physicians feel a need to speak out. Our statement is below.

Our Statement

We, the undersigned physicians licensed in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, affirm our shared concern for the health and safety of women. Based on scientific evidence and professional experience, we attest that abortion pills carry significant and well-documented risk of complications, including hemorrhage, infection, and the need for surgical intervention, despite claims of universal safety. It is essential for the health of women that an ultrasound be required prior to any abortion to determine gestational age, and confirm pregnancy location, ruling out life-threatening conditions such as ectopic pregnancy. It is likewise essential for the health of women that telehealth abortion be ceased, as this practice removes critical safeguards that protect women by denying accurate diagnosis, in-person assessment, and emergency readiness. Additionally, online ordering of pills that completely remove women from the healthcare system must be stopped[CC3] . As medical professionals committed to patient safety, we cannot support a system that treats a serious medical procedure like an online transaction. We stand united in our belief that women deserve comprehensive, compassionate, evidence-based care, not pills by mail or text.
